The CAS is continuing to receive a large volume of emails and calls from candidates, members, and employers related to the May 1 exam sitting. Working with candidates who were impacted on May 1 and other candidates who experienced issues during the spring exam sitting is currently our top priority. We appreciate your patience as we work through responding to all of the emails received and address your questions and concerns.

As of May 8, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. ET

Due to the large volume of emails received, we are providing a general update on the May 1 exam administration.

Although all affected candidates have been contacted and provided with options for next steps, we recognize that there are additional questions that candidates would like to have addressed. We have updated our FAQ to provide answers to the most-cited questions. Please note that due to the continued large volume of emails, we may not be able to respond quickly to every question that candidates have asked. Therefore, please ensure you have read the updated FAQs before contacting the CAS with a question.

As a reminder for candidates:

Finally, to maintain the integrity of the examination process for candidates, it is important for candidates to adhere to the confidentiality and nondisclosure language in their candidate agreement.

We recognize that the May 1 administration issues have presented extenuating circumstances that are wide-reaching and impact many different types of candidates. We understand that the solutions required to meet these unusual circumstances are outside the scope of the normal CAS exam administration procedures and thank you for your understanding as we do everything we can to best serve those affected.

The CAS is receiving a large volume of emails and calls related to our recent communication about the May 1 sitting. We appreciate your patience as we work on replying to everyone affected. We request that you please do not contact Pearson VUE directly regarding scheduling until you have received your official Authorization to Test email. If you do not receive a confirmation email from the CAS for your May 1 submission form within 48 hours, please contact us directly at casexamshelp@casact.org.

We have posted a comprehensive FAQ that answers candidate questions identified by the Candidate Advocate Working Group.

We sincerely appreciate your support of coworkers, peers and others who were impacted by the May 1 exam administration. We are especially grateful to employers who continue to support candidates and volunteers who have been impacted. We will continue to provide updates on the situation as there are new developments.

Update from CAS President Frank Chang

Dear Candidates,

I am following up on the Pearson VUE technical difficulties experienced by candidates during the May 1 exam administration. This includes:

  • Candidates who completed their exam but may have experienced technical issues.
  • Candidates who partially completed their exam with technical issues but who could not submit their final exam.
  • Candidates who could not take their exam at all.

CAS leadership has been in regular communication with Pearson VUE, CAS candidates, employers of CAS candidates and CAS Admissions leaders to determine how best to address this situation. Understanding the importance of exam progress to our candidates and their employers, we have decided:

  • All candidates scheduled to sit on May 1, including those who submitted a completed exam, will have the option to reschedule and sit for their exam in the next few weeks.
  • Candidates who could not begin their exam scheduled for May 1 will be automatically reissued an Authorization to Test (ATT) email to enable them to reschedule their exam. The exam authorization will be sent on Monday, May 6.
  • Those who submitted a completed or partial exam will have the option to have their May 1 exam graded or to reschedule their exam, based on information the CAS will provide on Monday, May 6. To assist you in making an informed decision, this information will include how many items were presented to you and how many responses were received. A form will be provided to indicate whether you intend to sit for a rescheduled exam or accept the results of your May 1 exam. Those who do not reply will have their May 1 completed or partial exam graded.

We acknowledge that you are eager to learn more about these processes and may have initial questions. As more details will be provided on Monday, May 6, please reserve any additional questions until you receive a follow-up email on Monday.

We have enjoyed a generally positive partnership with Pearson VUE since we launched computer-based testing in 2020 and were disappointed with the May 1 situation. I understand your frustration after you have spent months in preparation for the exam, and I also understand the concerns of your employers. We sincerely regret this situation occurred and apologize that you were not provided with a positive exam experience.

The CAS is receiving a large volume of emails related to this situation and we appreciate your patience as we work on replying to the emails. We request that you please do not contact Pearson VUE directly until additional information about rescheduling has been provided early next week.

Again, I express my sincerest apologies for this situation. Given the circumstances, we are making every effort to provide a solution that is fair and respectful to you.

Sincerely,
Frank Chang, FCAS
CAS President

CAS candidates sitting for exams on May 1 were affected by a production issue at Pearson VUE centers that disrupted their exams. These issues impacted many Pearson VUE clients across North America and were not specific to the CAS. We understand and share candidate and employer concerns and frustrations regarding this situation and sincerely regret that it occurred.

Through discussions with Pearson VUE and communications from candidates, we understand that there are primarily three scenarios experienced by candidates:

  • Candidates who completed their exam but experienced technical issues.
  • Candidates who partially completed their exam with technical issues, but who could not submit their final exam.
  • Candidates who could not take their exam at all.

The CAS is working on separate communications to each of the three groups above and candidates should expect to receive a more specific follow-up email regarding next steps pertaining to their situation as soon as possible.

The CAS is receiving a large volume of emails related to this situation and we appreciate patience as we work on replying to the emails. Candidates whose situation is not addressed by one of the scenarios above, should send a follow-up email to casexams@casact.org.

Please know that issues that arise during exam sittings are taken seriously by the CAS and the Syllabus and Examination Working Group leaders, and we aim to resolve them as quickly as possible and in a fair manner.

We understand that all of our stakeholders have a vested interest in the on-going developments and next steps. In an effort to keep everyone informed, we will be updating this page with the latest information.
